Agricultural scientists should concentrate on nutrition

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi asks agricultural scientists to not only work for food security but also provide nutrition to the people. Gogoi while inaugurating the first commercial tissue culture laboratory, at the Assam Agricultural University here expresses concern over the food crises all over the world. He said that India too had produced less rice this year and the State's rice production had also decreased considerably. The state-of-the art laboratory, built with the financial assistance of the Indian Council of Agricultural research (ICAR) has made a target of producing one million banana sapling per year using tissue culture techniques. This will immensely help in entrepreneurship development in the Northeast. The laboratory will also take up schemes to produce various orchids and better quality saplings of citric fruits in future. The lab will run under the supervision of the department of agricultural biotechnology, AAU. The Chief Minister also laid the foundation stone of the proposed farmers' hostel in the AAU campus. This will accommodate more than 100 farmers, who often come to AAU to attend training, workshops, etc. Notably 24 seats will be exclusively reserved for women farmers.
