The steep hike in fuel prices will cause a dent of Rs 20 crore in the coffers of the BEST per year. However, the undertaking does not intend to tax BEST commuters any further with higher fares. "There would be no increase in the BEST bus fares,' said Uttam khobragade, General Manager, BEST undertaking. Meanwhile, the city's autorickshaw and taxi unions are adopting a wait and watch policy. At present, both unions have not expressed any plans to demand higher fares. Speaking to FPJ, Sharad Rao, president, Mumbai autorickshawmen union said, "The fuel hike will not have direct effect on the autorickshaws as they are CNG based. However, family expenses of autorickshaw drivers are likely to go up. At present we have no plans to hike auto fares, however, we will wait for some days and take steps if required.' Rao added that the fuel hike would also result in higher charges for the lubricants used by the rickshaw drivers. The Bombay Taximen Union also has no plans to hike fares. "Most of our taxis are run on CNG and thus would not be affected by the hike in fuel prices. However, taxi drivers plying in Nashik and on the Mumbai-Pune route will be affected. We will wait for some days and take a decision if required,' said Prem Singh of the Bombay Taximen's Union.
