Four crore signatures call for Food Bill in this session

Left parties submit the papers to Prime Minister
Leaders of four Left parties met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday to ask the government to take immediate measures to bring in food security legislation in this budget session that would provide for a universal public distribution system; ensure 35 kg of grains at not more than Rs. 2 a kg and end the cash transfer scheme for the public distribution system.
The parties, through a campaign throughout the country, had collected over four crore signatures. Papers carrying the signatures were delivered at the Prime Minister’s Office.
The leaders who met the Prime Minister were CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat and his counterparts of the CPI, AIFB and the RSP S. Sudhakar Reddy, Debabrata Biswas and T.J. Chandrachoodan respectively CPI(M) Polit Bureau members Sitaram Yechury and Brinda Karat, CPI leader D. Raja, and Abani Roy of the RSP.
“All over the country, people are suffering from acute price rise, especially of food items. At this juncture, the issue of food security has assumed critical importance. The Left parties have been conducting a campaign for the past one year for an effective food security law based on a universal public distribution system,” the leaders said in the memorandum submitted to Dr. Singh.
“We hope your government will take immediate measures to bring food security legislation in this budget session of Parliament,” the memorandum said.
