"Banning exports and going after traders is not going to prevent shooting up of prices. This is based on a false assumption. And planting Jatropha instead of soyabean will only end up tripling of food prices,' Vandana Shiva, eminent environmentalist said. Substituting food crops with alternatives such as jatropha will only end up in the extinction of agriculture she said. Shiva blamed the build up of fossil fuel infrastructure for the rise in prices. "The time has come for fossil fuels to be taxed. In USA, to substitute 1% of fossil fuel, around 20% of the corn production needs to be diverted. To substitute 7% of fossil fuel, the entire corn production would have to be diverted and still the question of the remaining 93% would be left unanswered,' she said India is not a free market is the common notion and policy interventions continue to shake hands with the build up of fossil fuel, Shia remarked. Underlining the need for a paradigm shift, she said carbon was now considered a dirty word and organic farming and agro forestry systems could make a huge difference to maximizing levels of living carbon. This could result in 200 % in carbon return to the soil, she said. Shiva was speaking at a meet on 'Climate Change India 2008' organized by the World Institute of Sustainable Energy (WISE) in Pune on Tuesday. The next challenge for India would be to get rid of fertilisers, she said, citing the example of Bundelkhand where the use of tractors and machines had only resulted in crop failure. If we measure growth by environment and people, India is a negative Economy, she said emphasising the need for local community guards and revisiting Gandhian principles for solutions.
