California sea lions have a large body burden of organochlorine pesticides, and over the last decade they have also been subject to domoic acid poisoning. Domoic acid poisoning, previously recognized in adult animals, is now viewed as a major cause of prenatal mortality. The appearance of a chronic juvenile domoic …

UV photochemical degradation of a phenyl-urea herbicide chlorotoluron

UV photochemical degradtion of chlorotoluron was shown to be a photolytic process non-influenced by the presence of environmentally important catalyst (ferric ions) or sensitizers (soil humic isolate and humic peatbog wate), independent of pH values in the range from 2 to 11.

The toxicological monographs in this volume summarize the safety data on a number of food additives: acidified sodlum chlorite, asparaginase …

Hormone disruption by PBDEs in adult male sport fish consumers

Persistent pollutants, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), affect endocrine function. Human exposure to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), which are similar in structure to PCBs, has increased recently, but health effects have not been well studied. Our goal in this study was to determine whether PBDE body burdens are related to …

Exposure of neonatal rats to Parathion elicits sex-selective reprogramming of metabolism

Developmental exposures to organophosphate pesticides are virtually ubiquitous. These agents are neurotoxicants, but recent evidence also points to lasting effects on metabolism. The researchers administered parathion to neonatal rats. In adulthood, the researchers assessed the impact on weight gain, food consumption, and glucose and lipid homeostasis, as well as the …

Determination of pesticide residues in fruit-based soft drinks

Here the authors report the first worldwide reconnaissance study of the presence and occurrence of pesticides in fruit-based soft drinks. While there are strict regulations and exhaustive controls for pesticides in fruits, vegetables, and drinking water, scarce attention has been paid to highly consumed derivate products, which may contain these …
