Feeding ecology of the Asian elephant Elephas Maximus Linnaeus in the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, Southern India

The authors studied the activity patterns and feeding ecology of Asian Elephants Elephas maximus in deciduous and dry thorn forests of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, southern India. Over 20,000 instantaneous scan samplings on elephants revealed that 60% of the daylight hours were devoted to feeding.

A worthwhile programme

The National Biomass Cookstove Initiative launched recently will for the first time put the user at the centre of the efforts to develop improved chulhas. The programme that was started in 1986, and discontinued in 2002, aimed at providing improved chulhas to reduce indoor pollution and fuel consumption. It is …

Protecting the earth is not just everybody's business today but is also getting to be big business. Given that the world is still trying to crack how to green the planet at prices that don't burn a hole in the pocket, there is an immense opportunity for young Indian companies …

Satellites beam in biomass estimates

Additional detail could help bring woodland into a future climate treaty.

Biomass briquettes: Replacing coal and LPG

The rural population in India does not have access to reliable energy. India has millions of tonnes of unused and available biomass waste. This loose biomass is currently treated as a waste with no economic value. It is often burnt inefficiently in open fields, causing air pollution. However this 'waste' …

Developing national carbon accounting and monitoring system for India's forest - An ecosystem model approach

The Kyoto Protocol has made carbon a tradable commodity which signifies the value of forest carbon budgets and the need for understanding factors influencing them. For measuring future consequences of changes in land usage, current level of carbon emission and future patten needs scientific evaluation, if forest based climate mitigation …

Trade flows, barriers and market drivers in renewable energy supply goods

This paper points out the challenges in identifying goods used solely for renewable energy generation purposes for computing trade statistics. It also highlights goods for which identification is relatively easier and those sectors which appear to be more trade-intensive than others. In addition, it shows the key exporting and importing …

The biofuels market: current situation and alternative scenarios

At present the biofuels sector is going through turmoil and some analysts question whether biofuels will be able to keep their promises. The eventual outcome will depend on the policies that countries have already put in place and those that may be implemented in the future. The purpose of this …

Effect of salinity and dissolved nutrients on the occurrence of some seaweeds in Manakkudy estuary

Manakkudy estuary, located on the South-West coast of India has production of seaweeds to an amount of 15.59 kg/m2/yr. Four different types of seaweeds viz., Chaetomorpha aerea, Enteromorpha compressa, Gracilaria verrucosa and Hypnea musciformis were observed in this estuary. Highest production of biomass (C. aerea = 842.33
