• Oil subsidy may triple to 2.2% of GDP

  India's oil subsidy may shoot up three times to 2.2% of the GDP this year even as the government dithers on raising fuel prices in step with the rise in input (crude oil) cost. The country paid $8.7 billion in oil subsidies in 2007 or 0.7% of the GDP. In 2008 when GDP is slated to grow to $1.34 trillion, the subsidy may jump to $18.1 billion at $100 a barrel crude price, and to $23.4 billion at $115. At current market price, it would rise to $29.2 billion, Credit Suisse said in its latest report on subsidies in Asia.

• Fuel economy standards for cars get PMO green signal

  New Delhi: The government has finally decided to implement auto fuel economy standards. After a year of wrangling between the heavy industries, surface transport and power ministries, the PMO has decided that the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) will formulate the norms and notify them under the Energy Conservation Act while the surface transport ministry will ensure its implementation.

• Shenhua group likely to invest $1.5 billion on Thar Coal

  A Chinese state-run company, Shenhua Group Corporation, which had rolled back its plan in 2006, is likely to invest $1.5 billion for setting up 1,000 Megawatts coal-fired plants, it is reliably learnt. • World Bank lends $303m for thermal power plants

  NEW DELHI: The government on Thursday signed an agreement with the World Bank for renovation and modernisation of 640 mw of old coal-fired power plants. The rehabilitation project entails a cost of $303.4 million of which $180 million will be met through IBRD (International Bank for Reconstruction and Development) loan and $45.4 million from a grant from the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

• Oil min to seek freeing of petrol price tomorrow

  New Delhi: The oil ministry will make a strong pitch to unshackle petrol prices from government control and introduce a differential pricing mechanism, along with a small price increase of Re 1 a litre for diesel, when the Cabinet meets on Thursday.
